Engine Performance

This module provides a computer-linked simulator panel that represents the components of an engine management system on a screen-printed front panel mimic. Computer inserted faults are available to allow the student to perform troubleshooting tasks on the panel trainer.

Sensors and actuators can be disconnected from the ECU to allow “cause and effect” observations to be made and to allow resistance measurements to be taken. A simulated fault code reader is also available on the panel to allow realistic fault codes to be generated during faultfinding tasks. A simulated exhaust gas analyzer is also provided allowing the student to see the effects on the vehicle emissions under various operating conditions.

This module provides two distinct areas of study, one classroom based and one workshop based. The workshop-based activities are directed through the use of workshop task sheets that are printed out from the student’s computer. These task sheets direct the student through a series of hands-on activities that can involve the use of a handheld diagnostics scantool with a real vehicle.

This module includes a hardware trainer that is based on the real automotive components found in a distributorless ignition system. The unit is powered by a 12V DC motor and is supplied with an appropriate power supply, it is fully guarded and is intrinsically safe for student usage.

This module consists of a comprehensive series of computer aided instruction assignments that enable students to learn about fuel system components and their operation. The dynamic computer aided instruction provides interactive animations and high-resolution graphics that help the student understand the topics being delivered.

In addition to providing the underpinning knowledge for automotive fuel systems, the module also provides a series of practical activities. These are presented to the student as a series of workshop task sheets, which require access to a vehicle in a fully equipped automotive workshop.
