Fault Finding

The AutoFAULT system is a PC-based suite of simulated diagnostic software. The software tools are designed to replicate the equipment used in the automotive industry. Each tool is selected from an icon based menu system. It includes the following:

• Symptom and Road Test Report
• Scantool
• Engine Bay
• Breakout Box
• Fault Control
• Repair
• Databook

This is a complete system that allows computer controlled fault activation to be carried out on the engine control system of any suitably equipped vehicle. Using a modified commercially available breakout box, up to 16 individual faults may be inserted into the system.

The front-end software allows up to two faults to be inserted at any time. These may be static or intermittent. The intermittent faults have random on and off periods. A feature is also available allowing the user to insert a hidden random fault and then view the fault after diagnosis. A series of on-screen troubleshooting assignments is also provided, introducing the student to fault code retrieval using a scantool, and the testing of sensors and actuators.
